“The Story My Dentist Asked Me Not To Write!”

I hope this never happens to you.  I had just returned home from a business trip.  I was scheduled to speak at a major business meeting at my company later in the week.

Two days before the meeting, my mouth started killing me!  I had a sharp shooting pain in my gums.  It was a raging toothache!  With this type of pain, there was no way I could postpone treatment until after my business meeting to get relief.  I needed emergency help and I needed it now.  So I called my family dentist to schedule an emergency visit.  His receptionist told me she would check the doctor’s schedule and call me back.  Well, a day went by and there was no return phone call.  I couldn’t wait another minute with this pain.  I called my dentist again but it didn’t do any good.  He was too busy and couldn’t see me until the next day.  I couldn’t believe it!

I started calling every dentist in the phone book.  None of them could get me in.  So I called a friend and she referred me to her dentist.  The receptionist told me to come right on over and the doctor would work me in.  This dentist, Dr. Kelly Bridenstine, took time to listen to me, he understood the time frame I was under and he took immediate steps to get me out of pain.  I can’t thank him enough along with his wonderful staff.  I am already recommending this dental office to my friends and co-workers.  Start receiving the royal treatment I received.  By the way, I was in no pain, had no swelling and gave the best presentation of my life.  Thanks to my new dentist.

             Don Blaze – Olathe, KS.

 Dear Friend:

Above is a testimonial from just one of many happy patients who have experienced our dental services here at Perfect Smiles Dental Care.  Our practice is full of patients who have transferred into our office for a variety of reasons.  Many had previously experienced pain and discomfort, had felt pressured into accepting treatment that they didn’t want, had to wait weeks and months for an appointment, could not receive immediate emergency care or were treated rudely by the doctor and staff.

As you know, choosing a professional such as a physician, attorney, accountant, or dentist can be difficult.  Not all professionals are created equal.  They don’t all have the same qualifications, years of experience, people skills or work ethics.  So how do you go about making an informed decision about choosing the correct one who can meet your needs?

Since you inquired about this report we know you are a person who wants to be informed before making a decision in choosing a dentist.  We have been in private practice for over 17 years.  We've treated hundreds and hundreds of patients and have learned a lot from them and why they chose our office as their dentist.  From feedback by our patients and from years of experience in the dental field, there are seven categories you must be familiar with before you choose a dentist.

“The Seven Things You Must Know Before Choosing a Dentist” are:

      1)      Dentist respects the patient’s time and offers same day emergency care.

2)      Your comfort is the #1 priority during all dental services and procedures.

3)      Affordable fees with multiple payment options that fit within monthly budgets.  In house dental benefit payment plans offered.

4)      Number of years the dentist has been in private practice and quality of practice.

5)      Multiple treatment options offered.

6)      Customer service rating.

7)      Warranties offered on all dental procedures.

If you agree with these criteria, we can help you make an informed decision about choosing a dentist.

1)      The dentist respects the patient’s time and offers same day emergency care.

The key word is availability.  Is the dentist available to see patients when they want to see him or her?  Granted, it would be asking too much to expect a dental office to be open 24 hours a day.  But the office should be open enough hours during the day to handle the capacity of patients wanting to get in and leave room in the schedule for last minute emergency calls.  The definition of an emergency is pain, trauma, infection or a broken front tooth.  If you are a new patient, you should be able to get an appointment with the doctor within 7 days.  The office should offer early morning appointments or after work appointments or both.  The days of 9 to 5 working hours in the health industry are over.

Managed care offices that take a lot of discount HMO/DMO dental plans only make money when they see lots of patients per day.  With some plans the doctor gets paid whether the patient comes in or not.  So these offices many times hope the patients don’t come in.  When patients do come in, usually the time is short, the procedure is rushed and the doctor does the bare minimum “patch-work” procedure.  Spending time with these patients means lost income to the practice.

These same managed care discount practices claim they are “booked” months in advance and will make you wait long periods of time for an appointment.  Secretly they are hoping you’ll forget down the road about your appointment and not come in.  Remember, if you are on one of those managed care discount plans, these offices get paid whether you come in or not.

Does the dental office maximize your time?  Do they schedule a few well planned appointments so when you come in, lots of dentistry can be accomplished in one sitting?  This way you don’t have to take multiple days off from work.  Many offices will schedule only enough time to work on one tooth.  That means many trips to the dentist and many times having to be numbed up.

Wouldn’t you rather go to an office that can promptly get you in for an appointment?  Would you appreciate it if the doctor and staff spent quality time with you?  Have you ever been in an office where it is actually quiet and you felt you were almost the only patient there receiving undivided attention?  How about a few well planned appointments where you maximize your time and only having to be numbed up once or twice for your entire treatment requirements?  At Perfect Smiles Dental Care, allow us to exceed your expectations.  We know your time is valuable.

I want to thank Dr. Bridenstine and Staff for being so wonderful to me, not only by giving me my “Dream” smile but for also helping me through my extended process of bringing my teeth back to good health after years of neglect.  Every visit is welcomed with a warm greeting, as well as taken care of during the entire visit with a blanket/pillow, sweet, hand-holding or little rubs to make sure that I am comfortable, and constantly checking in to make sure that I am alright.  When I leave, I am so thankful for the kindness and genuine care that I am given. I feel honored and lucky to be a patient and feel part of the Perfect Smiles “family”. You are all so special and unique! Thank you! Julie Wilkerson, Kansas City, MO.

 2)      Your comfort is our #1 priority during all dental services and procedures.

We'll get right to the point on this one.  There is no excuse – none! – to experience any discomfort during any dental experience.  This also includes teeth cleanings by the hygienists.  We can’t tell you how many patients have transferred into our office because their previous dentist or hygienist caused them great discomfort.  With some dental procedures such as tooth extractions and surgery, there will be some post operative discomfort at home.  Pain medications should help alleviate these discomforts.  If they do feel pain, then the dentist should stop and administer more anesthesia and wait for it to take full effect.

A dental office concerned about a patient’s comfort, should offer a wide variety of choices for pain and anxiety control.  This includes many types of local anesthesia that is customized to the treatment and the patient’s health history.   There should also be a variety of ways to help a patient relax by way of conscious sedation techniques or with the use of nitrous oxide.

Does the doctor and hygienist have a soft touch or are they “heavy-handed?”  There is absolutely no excuse to feel pain during a normal cleaning appointment with a hygienist.

Does the doctor administer the local anesthesia in a comfortable manner?  Does he or she allow the anesthesia to take full effect before starting a procedure?  Many doctors rush the anesthesia part of the procedure and do not wait long enough for it to reach its full strength before starting.  If a patient feels pain or discomfort, does the doctor say, “hold on, I’m almost done.” Or does he or she give more anesthesia to insure total comfort?

At Perfect Smiles Dental Care your comfort is our number one priority.  You can totally relax under our comfort conscious anesthesia and sedation techniques.  You the patient are always in complete control.  If you feel any discomfort, you can raise your  hand and the doctor will always stop and take steps to make you feel comfortable.

You will experience extra gentle cleanings, short intermissions during dental procedures to rest and relax and all appointments finish with a nice warm moist towel to freshen up your hands and face before leaving.

Dear Dr. Bridenstine: Thank you so much for making my dental experience pain free and relaxing.  My teeth look great.  I am looking forward to my next appointment.  I will be sure to recommend your practice to family, friends and associates.  Thanks again.  Gary Berlin  Lenexa, KS.

         3)      Affordable fees that fit within monthly budgets.  In house benefit payment plans offered.

Dental offices must make it easy for patients to pay for their treatment.  All fees should be discussed in advance before any treatment is started.  They should be able to maximize any yearly insurance benefits the patient may have.  Patients need to be informed that they are ultimately responsible for any fees not covered by their insurance benefits.  The dental office personnel should assist in filing the insurance claims for the patients and give the patient pertinent information so patients can follow up with their insurance if a claim has been delayed.

To help pay for extensive dental work, monthly payment options should be made available.  These monthly payment plans should be able to break the dental costs down into affordable monthly payments.

Many dental offices are afraid to discuss fees and payment options and proceed with treatment hoping the patient will pay the entire fee at the day of service no matter what the cost is.  This method seriously affects the patient/doctor relationship.

Many dental offices offer the cheapest prices in town.  Always remember you get what you pay for.  Discount HMO managed care offices many times cannot afford to hire experienced staff, have high staff turn over and are unable to deliver high tech modern dentistry.  You have to ask yourself, do you want the best price or the best that dentistry has to offer?  Cheap prices and quality dentistry are not compatible.  Patients with limited funds should always be asked to seek the best restorative materials dentistry has to offer.  Why?  Because these patients can only afford to have the work done once.  Cheap patch work dentistry will wear out in a few years and it has to be redone.  It’s more costly in the long run when patch work dentistry is done.  It’s better to use long lasting top of the line restorative materials thus allowing the fillings and crowns to last for decades.  How many times do you want the doctor to work on your tooth?  Hopefully one time.  Insist on having the doctor use only the best restorative materials.

At Perfect Smiles Dental Care we have many affordable payment plans to help fit any treatment into your monthly budget.  We make it easy to financially do business with us.  We file your insurance claims as a courtesy and will help you follow up on them if necessary.  We will do everything possible to maximize your yearly insurance benefits.  We offer a 5% courtesy adjustment off any treatment plan if the fee is paid in full in advance with cash or check., 3% with credit card.

We also offer in house private dental benefit payment plans to all our patients.  Many patients do not have dental insurance or are unhappy with their present insurance company.  Our Perfect Smiles Dental Plans help many patients receive their dental work while they spread the payments out over a period of months.  If you are interested, please ask us to send you information about our dental plans.

Dear Dr. Bridenstine: I just wanted to express my appreciation to you and your staff for all the kind and caring service that I was given while at your office.  I have always been the type of person who has dreaded going to the dentist.  I felt that way before my first appointment at your office.  I was immediately put at ease.  Your staff was full of friendly smiles and calming conversation.  Your staff’s caring attitude has completely changed my view of what a visit to the dentist should be like.  Sincerely, Kristin Wagner – Overland Park, KS.

     4)      Number of years the dentist has been in practice and quality of the practice.

The number of years a doctor has been in private practice is a major plus in choosing a dentist.  Especially if this doctor has taken lots of continuing education courses in modern dentistry with high tech advancements.   Current and up-to-date dental techniques, comfortable anesthesia techniques, sedation dentistry, cosmetic dentistry and much more are NOT taught in dental schools.  They are learned and perfected “out in the real world.”  There is a big learning curve to become accomplished in many of these disciplines.  Most dentists, with few exceptions, with less than five years of experience in private practice, can only do basic dentistry.  Think of minor league baseball players.  They are good ball players, but they’re not at the major league level.   Dentists with over 10 years of experience in private practice and who have kept up with the changing technologies are practicing in the major leagues.  You should feel very comfortable going to their offices.

The quality of the practice is also important.  Does the doctor spend time with each patient and deliver the best that dentistry has to offer?  Does experienced staff work there?  Can the doctor show photos of before and after pictures of various dental procedures he or she has done?  Can the doctor produce documentation of actual testimonials of satisfied patients who have received dental work at the office?  Is there low staff turnover?  Is there a feeling of confidence and a calming attitude at the office?  Does the doctor each year take lots of continuing education training to keep up with the ever changing technology and pain free dental techniques?

At Perfect Smiles Dental Care we can answer YES to all of the above and more.

Dear Perfect Smiles Dental Care:  Before I went to see Dr. Bridenstine, I hadn’t been out on a date in over a year.  After having cosmetic work done to my teeth, I’ve been asked out on four dates the first two weeks after getting my new smile.  More importantly, I feel much more beautiful and am pleasantly surprised of all the attention I am receiving.  Thanks.  Amy Dalton – Kansas City, MO.

     5)      Multiple treatment options offered.

Many dentists have a tendency to tell patients what they need and pressure them into treatment by telling them if the work isn’t done soon, your tooth may break or need a root canal.  Discount managed care offices often recommend cheaper dental materials to be used for fillings and crowns.  The patients have no idea what the options are and what’s best for their teeth.  Are they ever told that the treatment can be spread out over a period of weeks or months to make it affordable?  Many dentists have adopted the “my way or the highway” attitude when recommending treatment.  Discount HMO practices purposely under diagnose treatment.  They say things like, “we’ll just watch that cavity and if it gets bigger, we’ll put a filling in it.”  You mean watch it get bigger so the tooth will eventually need a root canal and a crown?  They’ll recommend large fillings instead of permanent crowns.  They’ll recommend extractions instead of root canals to save the tooth.  Why do they do this?   They do it because they lose money when they do comprehensive long lasting dentistry.  It’s all about their bottom line.  Besides, the patients don’t know any better.

At Perfect Smiles Dental Care, you are in the driver’s seat.  It is your treatment plan.  We will recommend several treatment options then explain the benefits.  It’s our job to help you receive exactly what you want all within an affordable payment plan.   Remember, it’s your mouth, not ours.  We provide options and recommend treatment that we would for our own family members.  After all we like to think of our patients as our extended family.

Dear Dr. Bridenstine: The other day I walked into a sales meeting where I needed to make a presentation about a new product.  You should have seen the look on our client’s face.  She hadn’t seen me since I went in for a cosmetic dental makeover.  Where before my teeth had gaps, were crooked and ugly looking, but now they are white and straight.  The client was very impressed with my presentation and afterward said she really liked my “New Look.”  I didn’t think my teeth made a difference in my career, but I was wrong.  I owe a lot of my success to you and your staff.  Sincerely, Thomas Wakefield – Leawood, KS.

     6)      Customer service rating.

Can the dental office walk the talk?  Were you able to get an appointment within 7 days of calling?  When you called the office, were you greeted by a warm friendly person?  Did the staff make it easy for you to make an appointment and gladly answer any of your questions?  Were you greeted when you arrived for your appointment?  Were your needs anticipated and fulfilled?  Did the doctor and staff spend time with you and explain everything to your satisfaction?  Were you able to receive a cleaning on your first visit if you so requested it?  Were efforts made by the staff to help you feel comfortable before, during and after your dental visit?  Did you experience a comfortable and anxiety free appointment?

Here at Perfect Smiles Dental Care we strive everyday to exceed our patient’s expectations.  If we drop the ball, we will do everything possible to make it up to you.  We must be doing something right.  Hundreds of our patients have been with us for years.

To the Entire Staff of Dr. Bridenstine:  You guys are great!!!  Thanks so much for the movie tickets.  How could anyone think of looking elsewhere for dental care!  See You Soon,  Mandra Flines – Lenexa, KS.

     7)      Warranties offered on all dental procedures.

Nothing lasts forever.  Even great dental work will eventually wear out over decades of chewing and use.  But quality dentistry should last for many years.  Quality dentistry should look good, feel good and last a long time.  Unfortunately, many HMO/DMO offices that make a profit on volume dentistry have a tendency to use cheap materials and the dentists are rushed through the procedures.  Many of these patients end up at offices like mine to have their dental work re-done.

My warranty to my patients is this: they must come in regularly for their twice a year check-ups, exams and cleanings and if any dental work placed within the last five years that was completed at my office breaks or comes out, it is redone for free.  That’s right, my iron-clad, risk free, no questions asked warranty is this: if any dentistry I have done within the last five years needs replacing for any reason, it is re-done with a smile on my face at no extra charge.

We would like to invite you into our dental family.
